Probably my first real attempts at woodworking were Cub Scout 'pinewood derby' cars. Having only daughters, I thought I would not be able to share this experience with my kids. This year their Girl Scout troop had a 'powder puff' derby (basically the same thing, but pink). My girls helped to create their own cars, and the Mrs. and I made a couple to compete in the leader groups.

Although they weren't the fastest cars of the day, the girls had a great time designing and building them, and are proud of the results. They want to do a few more wood projects now as well.

I still have one of my first cars, from over 30 years ago, hopefully their memories will last as long.

There was some router work, the inside of the apple carts were hollowed with a router (using a template) and the green car has some coves cut on it. Most all other work was with a scroll saw or by hand (sandpaper and dowels). The yellow one is my youngests, it was the fastest of the four. The green one is my oldests, it did pretty well. The tanker was all about looks, but still held its own. The apple cart (my bride's invention) was second place in it's class for appearance.

It's always nice when the kids get in on it....and the boss too it some how makes it all worth it...and it's one of the high points in there life,, you can almost hear them say in 20 or 30 years from now, do you recall when you and dad made the cars for the Cub Scout 'pinewood derby' what ever happened to the cars we made anyway......

It makes me recall when the kids made jet cars for the race day at school and I still have them in a box in the garage somewhere....just 2 x 4's with 4 wheels and a CO2 cartage in it, but they sure run..
and the kids sure did like playing with them .....till dad stopped buying the CO2 cans,,,,by the box LOL LOL LOL ....... kids got to love them
