I have a router table with a plunge router.When I start to feed wood along the table the plunge router drops.I have tried to tighten the router but this does not work.I do not want to over tighten and risk breaking it.

Hi,

Not sure what type router you have but something sure sounds wrong. Have you even used the router as just a plunge router? Did it do the same thing after you locked it?

Maybe we should start with a bit more information, like the brand and model of the router, then if someone has the same router they may know what is going on.

Many plunge routers have a depth control knob which could be used to keep the depth from changing....... maybe you can try that if your is one of those models.

I have a Mastercraft router and table, it is a 7 amp, 1.25 HP.
I did not have the problem when using it without the table, but having said that, I haven't used it very much ,as I received it as a Christmas gift and haven't had much time to practice.

Today I plan to give it a run on some planks that are going to be shelves, nothing complicated, just rounding the edges.
I will keep you informed.

It would be safer if you remove the plunge spring from the router. By doing this, you still have the lock but no spring pressure and it makes the height adjustment easier as well .

I took the springs out of my freud...much easier to adjust..but i have to say..you might want to take it back and try another..it shouldnt let go under the table..

Hi Ed,

I haven't had much time to try my router, as work is getting in the way of my woodworking.I am presently working on the refit of a BC Ferry and the down time is limited.
I am looking forward to building a patio bench but need to get a mortise and tennon jig for my router table.I am also looking for a jig for dove tale joints.

But I must say, thanks for asking about my progress.
Hope to do some routing soon.

Hi Knott:

We have a MasterCraft plunge router and have experienced the situation that you described in your first post in this thread. Each time we went to route some wood, the locking handle would spring to the unlock position and the router would drop to its rest position.

Our solution was simple. We removed the coil spring in the locking handle. Without the force of that spring, the locking handle stayed in the latched position while we routed.
