If you're working in a table, the bearing on the top of the shank is mostly what you'd use - if out of the table, with the pattern on top of the workpiece, the bearing at the bottom of the shank is what you'd use. It just simply gives you the flexability to follow or mimic a finish edge that's either above or below the piece you're shaping.
