Talk about a blast from the past --
I had TOTALLY FORGOTTEN - Handy Andy

I would have been ALL OVER that Delta unit at that price.
I've never seen one and (now here I may be showing MY ignorance) but with a 1/2" shank and (if I guess right) about a 2HP motor it would be better than any router I have owned - not counting the metal table.

What I was poking fun at was the HF item with a top less than a foot square a less that 1 HP motor and a 1/4" shank billing itself as a shaper :-)

Hi Cowboy

Many shapers use a 3/4HP motor..

http://www.grizzly.com/products/g0510z
http://www.grizzly.com/products/g1035
Mini Shaper
http://www.grizzly.com/products/G8693

There are 3/4HP motors and then there are 3/4HP motors.

Think about this way,, 2 cly.eng. is like a router and a 4 cly. eng. is like your car eng. the norm..
The 2 cly.gets it's HP from speed so to speak the higher the speed of the motor the more HP...
Many of the shapers use a 3450 rpm motor...that can turn the bit at 10,000 rpm. the norm.

Just goes to show -- a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
I was basing my judgements on comments I had heard here -- and elsewhere --
advising me that even my 1.5 hp 1/4" shank router was minimal at best for using shaping bits such as raised panel or rail and stile.

Thanks for the clarification.
I understand the concept of torque vs speed etc.

Still not sure I would invest in one --
But - I would love to come across the Delta unit.

BTW -- the MiniShaper (third on your list) looks and sounds pretty much like the HF unit -- but with fancier 'cosmetics'. Interestingly it is listed at $20 LESS than the HF unit.

Hi cowboy

Many of the items sold by HF and Grizzly are made by the same company.

Delta 43-505 Router/Shaper

NOTE the reviews on this machine.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/cus...ustomerReviews

http://cgi.ebay.com/DELTA-ROUTER-SHA...QQcmdZViewItem

http://cgi.ebay.com/Delta-Router-Sha...QQcmdZViewItem

Note,,,,most shaper cutters should NOT be used on a router, most are made in the HSS format some have carb. tips.. , they can't take the speed or the heat.
And most have a 1/2" ID. hole for mounting to a shank arbor and some are 3/4" ID..

I'm probablt using inaccurate terminology --
I was talking about bits being sold as router bits -- most with 1/4" shank but a limited selection with 1/4".

I've been doing dadoes and rabbets and roundovers (with the occassional sliding dovetail) for YEARS --- Just now venturing into some of the more intricate areas. So I appreciate all input. Especially when it helps me avoid costly mistakes.

I am very grateful to forums like this one where theories and opinions can be thrown out to be either confirmed or corrected by those better informed and more experienced. Particularly the latter --- because I HAVE lived long enough to know that the way something reads in a manual or spec sheet -- and what happens when you USE it -- don't always coincide.

Thanks again
