Default Bob & Joe...

Just more curiosity --
Saw in interesting gimmick at HF the other day -
A cast iron base about 9" high and about 6" square.
Priced at $112 They bill it as a Router/Shaper ---
And they say you can use up to 2" router or shaper bits.
These are the things that caught my eye --
BUT --
On closer inspection --- it has only a 1/4" shank and a 7/8th hp motor.

Even to my untrained mind - that would raise some questions --
And from things I have learned on here --- I have a notion what the answers to those questions would be.

If you had very limited space -- and needed a low-end routher to do some simple roundovers on small pieces -- I guess I can see value in this item --

But - as advertised - would it not fall squarely in the oversold gadget category with the VegAMatic and the Ginzu knife?
Or am I missing something?

I have seen that in that before on other forums. Delta I believe still makes this one. About the same thing only it does accept 1/2 shanks.

Read the Amazon Reviews from the link that Corey gave...

Doesn't look too hot...

Had never seen the Delta unit.
If the price was right -- I might have been lured into playing with it.

But -- if the Delta item ranks as "not too hot"
Which appears to be the concensus of the reviews (and could account for its being discontinued).
Then it sounds like my negative first impression of the HF item was right on target.
The HF item is about 1/4th the size and half the power of the Delta product - plus the 1/4" shank limitation.

Speaking of price-- I didn't see a price for the Delta unit on Amazon's site.
Do you have to register with them or something to see prices?

Yes -- I am one of those strange dinosaurs that still prefers buying in actual stores.

bobj -
That was my first impression --
and you know -- it's even the right material and weight --
For a boat anchor that is --- or maybe a really fancy paper weight or door stop.

Well, I guess I'm just too uninformed to realize I got a special deal, even if no one else likes it. I bought the Delta unit new with a stand at a closeout when "Handy Andy" was going out of business. Paid $60.00 for the whole thing..... It sat in my garage for years, because when I tried to use it, it wouldn't work. Of course closeout special had no returns. Then, one day, after I had electricity brought to my garage, I tried the Delta again, just for kicks, and to try to decide what to do with it. Lo and Behold it runs beautifully!!!! I guess the problem before was the extension cord drew too much voltage. Anyway, I have really taken an interest since you guys brought it up, and I am enjoying playing with it. I especially like the bit change feature on top. Easy to manipulate. Just my 2 cents worth.
