Question Pen housing box??

hey guys, i am going to get a lathe and start making pens, i would like a cool design on a box to house the pens and dont know where to start

does anyone know where to buy wood that is thick enough for a pen box? each side needs to be like at lease 1 1/2 in. thick thanks much guys.

Hmmm... Jeff, I don't follow you on this one. What kind of pen box would require 1 1/2 stock? Can you post an example?

If so I don't think you would have to have 1 1/2 stock. 3/4 inch for the bottom and 3/8 for the top would probably do it. Here is a cool style of pen desk box made with 7/16 s stock...top and bottom if I remember what the maker told me.

Jeff it uses 5m barrel hinges, it's almost an inch thick closed. Both of the styles can be done using those hinges. The Kallenshaan boxes use barbed kerf cut hinges in the photo. Search the Rockler website for both type of hinges.
