old folks

lets saw I have a small board 1 3/8 x 5 x 1/2 and I want to route a slot throught the face... how would I do this ? The slot is going to be used to put a nut and bolt through... part of a jig.

I think the easiest way would be to run it over a table mounted router with a stationary fence. Set the fence at whatever distance you require. I would use a feather board, and a push block. You could also build a template that would hold to stock material and run a hand held router over the top. You would need some type of guide to keep the slot straight. Hope that helps.

I think what he is wanting to create is a pocket for the nut/bolt to sit in. Like a T slot,... but maybe I am wrong.

I think you maybe right but this part got me "bolt through"

If you'er right he will need one of the bits below
they will make the job easy with one pass on the router table..

I like to use the key holes bits, they will let you a standard 5/16" dia.toggle bolt or a 5/16-18 sq. nut in the slot.....you can make your own tee-bolts easy with the toggle bolts ( they are full thread) and all you need to do is grind the sides of the head down so they slide in the slot you have selected...

I buy the 5/16 x 4" long toggle bolts and then cut them down to the size I need to use..

This was just a question... but the slot or hole will be completely throught the board so a bolt can go through.

John, for a one off I would (and did for the demo.) do it this way which requires no special tools or expense. Of course, if it is to be repeated in the future I would make a template as shown in previous posts of mine and adopted by several others, it is also shown in Template Tom's sticky.
You didn't say what size slot you required but using you're other measurements I assumed a 1/4" slot. All the bits for holding the material were from my rubbish bin and pinned into place, the result will depend on the care you take with the measurements. I hope this solves you're dilemma.

I have had an after thought, if a rebate is required for a coach bolt, leave the set-up as is, fit a larger cutter and reset the depth.
