As has already been mentioned --
'isolate the bearing' is woodie techie talk for
Move the fence forward so the bearing isn't touched.

And yes -- making shallow cuts is important for several reasons.
Including but not limited to - less 'grabbing' on the wood and smoother final cut.
As to whether to do this by raising the router a little at a time or by moving the fence -- that would depend on your preferences and setup.
With my setup it is MUCH easier to adjust the fence than the router depth.

excellent, now if i am going to isolate the bearing, would it be better to just remove it for the time being?, and then just carefully measure the distance between the bit and fence. Many of the router cuts will be exactly the same, so I could carefully set it once, and then make a large run. thanx scroll and wolf

thanx drugstore, I will make maybe 3 or 4 runs moving closer each time. I think this will definately be easier than adjusting the router.
