Well... I did it. I bought a new 11" band saw. The little bench top saw just wasn't big enough for re-sawing. The only problem is the new saw makes very rough cuts compared to the little saw. The only reason I can think of is maybe the blade. Anybody have any suggestions?

George, what size bandsaw did you buy? An 11"?

Yeah Dave, it has an 11" throat and will cut up to 6" thick stock.

What size motor does it have George? My band-saw is 14" with a 3/4hp motor and it really struggles re-sawing 5" softwood using a 6tpi blade.

Hi Harry. It's a ShopSmith band saw so it runs off my 1.5 hp ShopSmith adjustable speed table saw motor. It handles blades from 1/16" up to 5/8". The 5/8" has 3 tpi and would be used for re-sawing and straight cuts only.
I did some tweaking on the block adjustments and tried different feed rates and that seemed to help some on the cuts. It came with the 1/4" blade so I ordered a set of cool blocks, a 1/16" (has to have cool blocks) and a 5/8" blade. It will probably cut better with a different blade and the cool blocks.

George, I thought that my BS was underpowered, one day if I come across a cheap motor, that's low cost, there really is a difference! I will change it. Regarding the blade, I'm having difficulty obtaining a blade with less than 6tpi but I shall keep trying.

Hi George

At one time I had a SS with the band saw setup and they work great once you replace the Spring that keeps the blade tension right, the Fac. one is a bit weak but you can find one one by using the web site for ShopSmith Tools Forum plus many tips for the SS ...like How-To-Resaw on the SS band saw.

Thanks Bj.

Harry, try Googling for Timber Wolf bandsaw blades. I don't know what length blade you need, but Woodcraft ( www.woodcraft.com) has them in the 72" X 1/2" with 3 & 4 TPI. They aren't cheap but I have heard that Timber Wolf is one of the best.

Sorry George, I was thinking stand alone BS's. Like 14", 16", etc. Cause I do have a 10" BS that sets on a table. Congrats again.
