Okay fellas, I'm counting on you to figure this one out for me. Cutting notches in a 2"X6" to hold a 2"X4"= notch 3 1/2 X 1 1/2 of course. Using top-of-the-line Milwaukee sabre saw with proper blade. The straight in cuts, from the edge on the 2X6 were fine, but when we went to cut the length, with the grain, the cuts were not straight up and down at the inside of the notch. No matter how hard we tried to make sure the blade stayed straight up and down, the last half of the cut (the bottom) were always bowed out or otherwise uneven. Hope you understand what I mean. Imagine 2X6 is laying on its side and we are cutting in from one edge etc.
Why? What would (apparently) deflect the blade away from the cut at the bottom of the cut?
Drivin' me n' my brother nuts!!

Hi Birch

When it comes to using the jig saw in the RIP mode the blade is the key,,,you can find blades that are made just for that... they are a bit thicker and wider than the norm..
The blade will rip wood just like cutting hot butter... and will cut true...but don't turn well..

Bosch makes many kinds and you can find them at HD,Lowes,ACE,etc.

My favorite blade is a Progressive blade... is about 1/16" thick... looks like a surgical blade... razor sharp... Just fantastic!!

The grain of the wood is deflecting your blade, the crosscuts are no problem, but the longer rip cut you see more of the effect. I agree with Bob that beefier blades can solve this, as well as feeding at a slower rate. You might want to try turning off any 'orbital feature' your saw may have.

As a side note, I've got an el cheapo jig saw (a Grizzly) and with the stock blades it was just adequate. I've switched to bosch progressor blades, and that has turned a basic saw into a fantastic tool.

Hope this helps,

OK Bob... you found me... I have pics that have the names on them...
You found one that doesn't have them... (my website... have to update that one). The other guy is Sam Maloof... lives up the street about 5 minutes away.

This was easier than posting a picture... read the reviews also...

Well boys, it looks like I am getting smarter all the time. I TOLD my brother it was the blade and AND cutting with the grain! Ha!! Thanks. And you can bet I am going immediately to the Net to search out some of the blades you mention. I was using a Milwaukee blade in the big Milwaukee saw (don't recall the model but it was about $170) It IS orbital and I DID check to see it was set as low as possible. It is a GREAT saw.
