Default Need Help On Design.....

I want to make a box of sorts... not huge but larger than a jewelry box... well sort of a jewelry box for woodworkers Basically a small chest to hold my marking and lay out tools, squares etc. that kind of thing. Maybe 2 or 3 drawers and the lift up lid. I want to make it out of 1/2 oak for the sides and most of the carcass. I want the drawers to slide out on 1/4 splines in 1/4 grooves in the carcass and drawer slides. Maybe all drawers and then I can just have the top and bottom dovetailed to the sides. That might be best. If I did it that way, what would you do for the back? Just make a rebate and and put a quarter inch back on it, or make a floating panel like a box bottom? Just looking for ideas and what would make the best long lasting construction. Any photos of anything like this you guys have made. For size I am talking not much more that a foot tall, 14 -16 inches long and maybe 8 inches deep.

Thanks!

Corey

How about the ones in the snap shots below, you can just see them in the background but if you want to see more just ask and I will take some snapshots , that's just what I use the ones I have for small tools,sq.,and they are 1/2" Oak and just the right size for the small tools.

Corey, as a rule a small portable box would have the same thickness material for a solid back, such as a machinists tool chest. If you are building this to leave on a shelf or bench then a simple recessed back of 1/4" material would be fine. If it will be moving about then consider the stronger solid version.

Thanks BJ, the one of the right is more of the size I was thinking. Thanks Mike, that makes sense. Bj those boxes I assume are meant to be portable and I bet can get pretty heavy as well. How is the back attached on those chests?

Hi Corey, I would lock mitre the carcase joints and rebate the back, that's what I have done in the past pre-digital cameras!

Hi Corey

Here's a snapshot or two that should help
It's a quick and easy way to make a tool chest it's not to hvy.until you get it loaded up with stuff,,, I did take snapshots of both and tried to show you all you will need to make one or two, can't have to many tool boxes for the fine tools..
Back= 1/2" thick stock, T & G, 1/4" wide and 1/4" deep on all 4 edges,that locks the back in place (1/2" thick Oak vern.plywood)

Thank you Harry and thanks Bj for all the photos and taking the time to do that. They are here for when I need them now I am going to build a new bench when the kitchen is done and I want to build a box like this to set on it.
