Default Need some help/advice about flooring

Hello,

I'm new here Been searching some info about feasibility of making my own floors. Here's a situation i'm in: we have an older (early XIX c.) home...with mostly original wideboard (some of the planks are over 2ft wide) pine floors all around the house. Kitchen has been redone sometime ago by someone else, and i'm about to embark on total remodeling of it. So i'm thinking it's a good time to take a look at the floor --> it's going to be around 225 sq ft in total. Can you guys help me out with suggestions on what would be the best way of doing it? We've been to a couple of flooring shops, and what they have is not all bad --> we kinda liked "rustic" (tons of knots, hehe) maple floor, available in 5 1/4 width, tongue&groove. that would be our choice if we'd to fing out there's on better choice. Ok, we (me and my wife) don't like the look of engineered flooring, so that's pretty much out of the question, i'd have to be , perfectly, something to "fit" into the original home design, i.e. widest possible planks, i'm affraid can't use pine, as it'd be too soft and would be destroyed in no time (160lbs mastiff in house , lol)...btw i'm in Vermont if that matters at all , as for availability of local lumber. Do you have any suggestion for wood type that can be safely used w/o big risk of cupping as well as the installation method... existing floors are face-nailed directly to the beams, w/o subflooring. can t&g work with wider boards? uhhh..well... any suggestions/pointers would be appreciated, sorry for a long post, heh
