Default Just got the OK for a jointer

Wife gave the OK for a 6" jointer.

Dad says get a general..But then he's born and raised in Canada so there ya have it.

I like Jet..The general is the same price and seems to be put together well.

Anybody have thoughts?

Hi Joe

MANY of the jointers are made the same way, if you take a real hard look at them you will see that ,so go for the best price you can find...and do get a Vac.pickup cover and a extra set of blades....plus find a BIG old speaker and remove the magnet from it and it will help you replace the blades when you need to set them up....

One more note*****
DON'T run the jointer without the Vac.system running, the chips will go around and around and chip the blades...
That's one of the items they don't tell you about in the user guide (manual) they want to to come back for more blades .... you may also want to get a sharpner at the same time, that you can use on the machine with out removing the blades (diam.hone type)

Joe, if it is a true General and not a General International then go for the General. The General is made in Canada the General International is made in Tawain which more than likely they are made right along side and in the same factories that Jet, Delta International, Grizzly and a host of others are made. Not much difference other than the color.

Good info

The Genera I'm looking at has the big ole canadian flag on it and says made in Canada so I think I'm safe. I really like it and the way you can store the push blocks on the closed stand.

Great tips Bob..Chips should not be an issue with my new Jet 1200 cfm dust collector

The shop is looking up. I so want to raise my floor and run all my dust coll under the floor. My ceiling is 12 ft in the garage so I could even still pull cars in if I needed too

Cars..Garage.....NOT It's a shop now.

Joe, don't let that discourage you.... those made in Tawain are good jointers. It comes down to the tollerances that GI, DI, Jet etc. require... the rejects go to Harbor Freight and companies like that from what I have been told. If color is more important than price ... then go with the GI. There really wont be much difference... GI and Jet have flatter tops on the tablesaws and the grind is smoother from what I have seen. My Delta was ground on the rougher side... I had to smooth it with a scouring pad and WD40 with a pad sander on top of the pad.

Joe, have you looked at the Ridgid 6" Jointer/Planer? I have one and it is an excellent, high quality, machine right out of the box. The 4" dust chute works great with my dc.

Good point George. If I was going to buy one right now that would be it. Bob Noles has the Ridgid as well. It has a good reputation.

Default Question for Bobj

Bob, have YOU actually used the magnet idea for re-setting the jointer cutters? I tried it a couple of weeks ago with a super powerful magnet and it was hopeless, both the cutter and back plate were pulled up together so I had to resort to the old method of using a piece of hard-wood and get the cutters to all just touch it over their full length. Could my magnet have been too powerful?
it came out of a vintage pre PC hard drive.

Hi Harry

Yes, I have used the magnet way, the one I use is about 6" in dia.and about 3" thick, the next time I do it I will take some snapshots..

The magnet I use will pull your buttons off your pants or shorts I use them all over the shop, they hold my hack saw to the work bench (on the side of it) hand saws, drill bits, hammers, you name I use a magnet to hold it in place not to talk about welding jobs, ground lead, etc. great welding jig parts holders..
