| Registered User Forum Fanatic | OK..I'm getting PRE buyers remorse on the Jointer. The 8" grizz is a great price. However, do I really need 8"?? Would a 6" paralelogram grizz be just as good? I have a local place that can and will plane and sand all my boards when needed. They will also sand my cabinet doors when they are done on the huge drum sander..I digress I don't see myself planing my own boards for awhile. What are the benifits of the 8" over the 6" jointer?? I could get a nice 6" with spiral cutter too. I'm soooooooooooooooo confused Joe |

| Senior Moderator Supreme Forum King | Joe, With an 8" machine you can plane wider boards. Rough sawn lumber most often will be in 6 -8" widths. The guys who mill it don't measure, they eyeball it. If you have a 6" machine then you have to trim off anything over 6" as waste. The 8" machine lets you convert what would be waste into useable wood for additional width or for use as trim or mouldings. If price is not an issue you are better off with an 8" machine. For me, price was an issue and I have a 6" machine. It makes me grimace when I have to trim off perfectly useable wood to be able to surface boards. I think you made a good choice.

| Forum Moderator Supreme Forum King | I agree with Mike, if you have the funds and the space, I would opt for the 8".

I have been happy, although I had to put it together by myself and let me tell you I am not as tough as I once was <laugh>. That sucker was heavy, I had to use lift jacks and pick it up a foot at a time. That will teach me to move to a place where I don't know anyone. |

| Forum Contributer Supreme Forum King | Hi laplover Some of the 8" machine can only be wired in the 220 volt mode, all the 6" model can be 110 or the 220 volts... Grizzly jointer "8" jointer, Motor: 2 HP, 110V/220V, single-phase, Magnetic switch is 220V only, TEFC, 3450 RPM" I would recommend you sick with the 6" one and then if the need comes up move up to the 10" one..the 6" will be easy to sale and get your money back so you can move up. unlike the high price of the 8" one....not to talk about what it takes to move it around the shop... and I'm sure you will..... | Forum Contributer Supreme Forum King | You'er Welcome Joe It's hard to get what want but you need to start at some point and in a year or two you will know that the 6" is right for now, the jointer is one of the tools you will use all the time once you get one and I'm sure you will say I don't know how I got along with out it. I think you will use it for edging most of your stock and not to much for getting the stock flat and true most of the stock you will buy will be done but once you rip the stock it needs to be redone on the edge ...there is nothing like having the stock flat and true on the edges it can be just a simple box and all the parts are right on the button and just a smoooooooth a baby bottom...the 1st time you pass a board on the router table you will say WOW this is the only way to do it... ![]() -----------
