Unhappy A Plane question

Hi, This question is kind of off the general router topics, but here goes...
I'm in the process of trying to tune up a old Stanley 101/2 plane and I'm confused about how close the chip breaker should be to the edge of the cutting edge. I've looked around at a couple of sites but so far I haven't seen what looks like a good answer. Do any of you old time hand tool guys have any guidence as to the correct chip breaker setting ? Thanks in advance for your advice. Don S

Is it just me or have others noticed how Bj has what seems like a mountain of facts, figures and links seemingly at his fingertips. I just printed out a few pages on maintenance of hand planes from one of the Stanley links he gave, and good info. it is.

Hi again, I guess I found the answer to my question here:
http://www.popularmechanics.com/home...s/1273861.html
It looks like it should be set @ between 1/32 and 1/8 inch depending on the deph of cut desired. I'm going to try this and see how it works.... Dons

Thumbs up Re Plane Question

Hi Don
In response to your question. The Hand Plane Book, By Garrett Hack answers your question.

"The final adjustmeent is setting the cap iron to the iron. Idealy the cap iron should be as far from the cutting edge as the thickness of the shaving you expect to make. I set the cap iron and cutting edge close to this position, just snug up the screw between them and then nudge the cap into final position before tightening the screw fully."

I just love this book unlike the company siites this guy has to rely on his tools to do what he needs so there is a lot of years of trial and error.

Hope this helps. Kelly...

And here is a link that I have found useful over the years. There is enough handtool info here to keep you busy for a VERY long time.
