| Registered User New Member | I want to make an open cube. 4 sides and a top. Each piece is 1 1/2 inches square. Is there a jig or some otherway to put in dovetail joints on all edges? |

| Forum Contributer Supreme Forum King | Hi winta It can be done with the 1/4" 8deg. dovetail bit and jig fixture. It can be done but it's going to be tricky because the parts are so small. What I would try is to start with a wide board,,,1/4" thick x 1 3/4" wide x 8" long, then put in the dovetails on both sides of the 8" board, then cut them to 3 1/4" long, then put the the rest of the dovetail in the 3 1/4"" long boards..then cut the 3 1/4" to 1 1/2" long, this should give you dovetail joints on 3 sides, if you want to push it and have dovetails on all 4 sides made a jig with one of the dovetail parts you made to hold one of the parts in place for the last dovetail side...this will be the real tricky one to get them all to line up at glue up.. Good Luck,, how about a picture or two after you have them made... http://www.grizzly.com/catalog/2007/Main/329 H3314 1/4" Dovetail Template http://www.grizzly.com/products/H3314 Pins & Tails Through Dovetail Templates Pins & Tails Half Blind Dovetail Jig Sets http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shops...vetailjig.html Also you may want to check out the NEW dovetail jig that Rockler came out with... ▼ http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?p...9&filter=30061 http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?p...0&filter=33748 http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?p...0&filter=31578 ========== Quote:

| Forum Contributer Supreme Forum King | Winta, you haven't mentioned you're level of skill, if a comparative beginner at routing I think dovetails on such small pieces would be rather ambitious, however, finger joints can look very pretty and would , I think pose less of a problem.

| Forum Contributer Supreme Forum King | Thanks for the reminder Joe, but I still think dovetails on such small pieces would probably be ambitious for all but the most experienced exponent of the router, it certainly rules me out.

| Senior Moderator Supreme Forum King | On the season 4 DVD Bob Rosendahl shows one of his favorite possesions. It is a box that is 1/2" x 1/2" with an open top. Each side has about 6 hand cut dovetails and they are at 14º angles. This was a gift from a friend. On a box 1-1/2" square the dovetails will not provide any more strength that the glue itself. So if your project is strictly for looks good luck with the hand cut dovetails.
