Default Don't over look the obvious....

...when you have problems with your tools. I've got a Craftsman router, got it from a friend and never used it before this week. Attempted to take the bit out and had to resort to almost prying it out as it was stuck fast in the tapered portion of the collet. Thought it must be dirty or rusty. Cleaned it good, and it still stuck fast the next time I put a bit in it. After much heated discussion between myself and the router, I decided I must need a new collet for it. Of course, since this is Sunday, the local Craftsman parts depot is closed.

After looking at the collet nut, and the tapered part of the collet again, I realized the problem... the "E" clip that holds the collet and nut together was missing, so when I loosened the collet nut off, it would not pull the collet out of the motor shaft. I will pick one of those clips up and see if it makes a difference.

Anyway, the point of this is to caution you to not miss the forest because you can't see past the trees. Sometimes the solution is right in front of us.

Not sure of the origin - it has been said many times
- but always bears repeating:

"When you hear hoofbeats -
- think horses ----- not zebras."
Not exactly the point of Brian's note --- but a close corollary.

Feel free -
It's certainly not original with me --
Its roots go back to the 14th century
Who firsrt worded it this way - I don't know --
But it comes in handy a LOT in my job ---- tech support.

Just a quick note to finish off this thread... the E clip is installed, and the collet nut is once again removing the collet when I loosen it off. $0.45 at the BORG was a wee bit expensive IMHO, but still cheaper then a new collet.

Brian that is so true, during my 50 years repairing consumer electronics, so many problems didn't require technical expertise to resolve, just plain common sense and a careful visual inspection.
