Default spent some time sharpening...

Today was a good day.

Went and got the plate glass sharpening stuff (scary sharp) from Rocklers today. Sharpened my planes, sharpened some chisels. All I can say is, "WOW!"

I picked up 4 Marples chisels at Rocklers for about $22. Sharpened all 4. Sharpened a brand new iron for my Anant jointer plane. After some adjusting, it shaves off a beautiful curl so thin you can literally read through it.

Sharp tools are a wonderful thing.

While I was there I picked up the Rockler dovetail jig. I have some drawers to build and thought it would be nice to dovetail them. Got that for 20% off. I even swept the shop.

I need to do the same thing! I got a pile of chisels waiting to be sharpened. What sandpaper did you use on yours?

I knew you would like it... I had a similar experience when I tried it.

Cory, I just bought the "fine" kit from Rockler. It has 800, 1200, 1500, and 2000 grit. The paper itself is Klingspor wet/dry (German made) and it's peel and stick. Stick it on a piece of plate glass and off you go.

I had to learn how to use the honing guide. I clamped a chisel into it and got the angle close. Took one fine swipe and looked at the bevel on the chisel. Touching the heel of the bevel but not the whole face of it (as evidenced by the dust on the face). Basically I tweaked the honing guide by loosening it and sliding the chisel back in the guide until the whole bevel face made contact.

For instant repeatibility on the honing guide, you can measure the distance from the tip of the blade to the guide and make a note of it. Each time you insert a new chisel, simply measure to the exact same place and you should be good to go at that same ange. You can also make a small jig or stop mark on a board and layout the measurement for each angle, then all you have to do is slide the tool in up to that mesaurement square to the board and honing guide and have instant easy repeatibility.

Yeah this sounds like something I want to do. I can see where it would need to be pretty exact because moving the chisel (or plane iron) just the smallest bit fore and aft in the honing guide makes quite a difference. I have a Veritas honing guide with the eccentric roller adjustment. Nice to do the bevel at, say, 25 degrees and then when you're about done, click the eccentric to final hone a microbevel at 26 or 27 degrees. I can't believe how sharp my blades can be.

I looked at some of the angle jigs on line. I'm guessing I could make one. If I drill through about a 2 and a half inch block, using a drill the diameter of the honing guide's roller, I could then saw it such that it forms a stop block into which that roller fits. Glue that block to a strip of hard wood and then set up a blade for 25 degrees. And really spend the time to get it spot on. Now with that blade in the honing guide, set the roller against the stop block and mark where the blade touches the strip out ahead of the guide.

Yeah, I'm sure it could be done in a much simpler way, but this kinda sounds neat and would be a way to use some of the smaller pieces of oak and/or maple I've got laying around to make a useful item. And if I'm feeling especially inventive, I may even figure out a way to build in a way to get the blade square to the guide using the same device.

Here are some pictures I borrowed from friends that show some ideas on how one could go about doing this.
