| Registered User Supreme Forum King | Well, dug out the jointer yesterday. Haven't used it in awhile, so thought I'd brush off the dust. LOL Anyway, grabbed an old pallet board, I checked it twice with my eye and twice with a metal detector. All I can say is, not all metal detectors work. The jointer found a buried nail. Now, all four knives have a "nic" in them, I have to order new knives. The metal detector picked up my watch band but wouldn't pick up the nail in the wood, this has me frustrated. ![]()

| Senior Moderator Supreme Forum King | ShopNotes has an issue with plans to build a sharpening jig for knives of this type. It would be a worthwhile project to build.

| Registered User Supreme Forum King | Thanks Joe, the good news is I can avoid the nic for smaller boards. I can move the fence to cover where the nic is. I got an extra set of knives, just need to find 'em. Got 'em buried somewhere's in the shop. LOL Thanks Mike, I've seen the plans in shopnotes. I agree it would be a essential project to build. My winter project was to be a thickness sander but, we all know how plans change. Currently trying to build a sled for the ts and a table for the bs. Now.... oh how I hate when plans have to change. LOL

| Forum Contributer Supreme Forum King | Hi Ken Just a tip from a long time user of the jointer,, just replace them and keep the bad ones in the box, then when you have 3 or 4 sets send them out to reworked...most nicks are deep that's to say 1/16" deep and you need the right tool to repair them right... ![]() I also use old lumber (pallets) and it's hard to keep the blades from getting nicks in them most the time you can find all the nails and staples but the ROCKS that get embedder in the wood will nail the blades just like a nail... I order some carb.tip blades and that was a big error because they fracture the carb. bit and the guy that puts the edge back on them will just say junk blades and just put them in the trash can most of the time, the jig you can make will put the edge back on when the blade gets dull but removing a nick WELL ...plus the blades must stay in balance ,so to say if you remove some from one blade the others must be the same or real close... ====

| Registered User Supreme Forum King | Thanks Bob. This is why I usually have an extra "set" or two. I try to think of "worse case scenerio". Will work on it throughout the week, I hope.
