Smile Kreg system opinions?

Say fellas, I am closed to popping for the Kreg K2000 kit. It looks like quality stuff and I have seen a demonstration of the joints done with the Kreg system. So I figured as a last check I would find out what the old guys have to say. Any owner/operators out there? What do you think of the system and the K2000 "kit". Thanks.

Birch,

I have the CMT version and I love it. The Kreg one looks great too. I'm sure you'll find uses you've never thought of. The CMT version I have set up on a 4 foot long piece of MDF with a 'bench hook' type front end. This way, the pieces don't wobble on the jig base.

One subtle hint, the step drill bits don't like concrete floors. More correctly put, they don't like the sudden stop when they fall to the concrete floor... But hey, when I bought a replacement Kreg bit, I got the little 'rocket' jig for free.

I added a picture of the setup. I pull the shop vac adapter out of my Miter saw and put it in the pocket hole jig when I'm doing a bunch. It really makes a big difference. Unfortunately, with the big shop vac and the little holes on the jig, it gets a little loud.

Hi Birch,

I have the K3 system, havent' used it yet. From what I've heard and read, it's wise to get extra bits. IMHO, Kreg makes an excellent quality tool(s). I believe Bj and Corey have the K2. I'm sure they'll pop in soon.

Hi Birch

This is just my 2 cents

I like the K2 full system if you can still find it,,, The K3 it light on some parts that's to say the K2 came with more stuff in the case kit..
If I recall about 6 more items

The Vac.pickup on the K3 is nice but it's not a big deal to make one for the K2 system...I do like the hold down clamp on the back side of the K2...the K3 is right in the front of the jig and it's right in the way...

K2 was on eBay for a great price, close out price item...

Okay fellas, I bought the K2000 yesterday with a box of screws and some plugs. Paid $125 for the whole package. Tried it out. Nifty stuff and I'm guessing that when I get more familiar with it I will find lots of uses. It sure is nice to see a well thought out high quality piece of gear.
Bought mine at a local place.
Thanks for your comments and observations.

Birch,

one of the best things I like about pocket holes is when I'm making jigs or fixtures that will be used once and then destroyed. glue them up, clamp them with the pocket hole screw, then when the glue dries, pull the pocket hole screws out. No risk of running a blade or bit into a brad, and no ackward clamping.

You can also make adjustable jigs, etc by using screws instead of nails. The washer head ones are great for that.

have fun experimenting!

HI Guys

What I like about the K2 and the K3 is the sq.drive screws, I'm not sure if Kreg was the 1st.to make them or just use them but I find that I use them just about all the time now,I don't buy any more phil.drive head any more when I can find the same thing in sq.drive, I like the way the screw driver can be short of LONG and I can chuck it up in the power drill...or use a standard handle type driver ..

It's real pain to use the phil.drive screws they are aways caming out just when I need to crank it down all the way...I just hate to hear that click, click, click, click from the screw...and that just put that sharp edge on the top of the screw head..not to say I know it's going to be a real pain if I need to take the screw out..or move it in or out just a bit..

Here's a snapshot or two of the upgrade I did to the K2 I have to get it up to the K3 type...

Just for clarification Bj, the square drive screws, or Robertson, is a Canadian invention... Robertson And I have to agree with you, I try not to use anything but Robertson head screws. The rest are nothing but a PIA.

Well Bob3, nice to see you just COULDN'T leave well enough and had to modify your K3! Do you EVER sleep? Ha!! And Brian is dead-on correct about the Robertson screws. And I am also a big fan of the Torx screws, although some people hate 'em. And I gotta say, I really picked the K2000 over the new Master K3 etc. for what I need to do and the additional "stuff" that came with it. Keep in mind now fellas that I am not a true craftsman like most of you guys are; I just like to fool around in my little shop doing simple things because I am really challenged when it comes to anything mechanical or anything that requires a grasp of conceptual assemblies etc. If often takes me a looooonnng time just to assemble and figure out how to use a new device.
Four days to get the hang of a new electric pencil sharpener.
Oh, all right, maybe not that bad.
Thanks again.....back to the wood dungeon.

There's a couple of dvd's available from Kreg for table and cabinet making that really helped me understand this tool. Check them out if you can, cheers.
