Default Carving with a Dremmel

I want to carve some simple detail into table feet using a Dremmel. Unfortunately I've never used one before for this purpose and am not sure of the type of bits to use. Can anyone advise on the bit types I'd find most useful (preferably with pics of the bits!). I'll practice on scrap wood first but the finished work will be on white oak.

Hi Geordie

would suggest the two items below.because the Dremel needs 1/8" shank bits..

http://www.grizzly.com/products/h0880
and the g6950 but it will take a phone call to Grizzly to see if they still have one in stock..

For wood carving a Zip bit is the tool of choice. These are the bits sold with RotoZip rotary saws. The SaberCut bit is designed for wood. Dremel offers similar bits.

Geordie, what is it you want to carve on the legs? Flutes, like a claw type stuff, leaves and vines or flower like stuff?

Thanks for all the info guys. Corey, I'll probably keep it basic to start with claw style feet and some simple vine leaves.

If it was me Geordie I would lay it out in pencil. For the claw feet type of carving... I would use the carbide balls or the high speed cutters like below. There are a number of different profiles that will be helpfull. Small hobby rasps and rifflers will also be helpful I think. For the leaves and vines the pointy type with a real light touch will be nice. Might be helpfull using these in the router base as well if it will sit flat. I have done engraving type work using the router base like that. Just look through the carving and engraving section and see what looks like will work. Hope this helps.

Thanks Corey, that's made it much clearer as to what bits I'll need. Fingers crossed!

Hi Geordie

Just one more way to get the job done..

I use a air die grinder they use 1/4" shank bits and you can get many, many cutters for them..

If you want I will post a snapshot of the tools and the bits I have,,,,most of the bits are shot but I work them very hard on steel and wood...

I'm not a big fan of the Dremel tool,, no power and the bits wear out and break in a heart beat..
I do have one or two Dremels but not for Carving jobs..

Because you are going to do some Carving on Oak you may want to take a hard look at the die grinder way...
The one turn screw on sanding pads will take off tons of stock and will soften the carving and do alot of the carving, I get the ones I use from Snap-On then are made to remove gaskets plus many other jobs but they work great on wood and come in many grits....

Thanks for all the tips guys. Bj, that Grizzly grinder sure looks like the tool for the job. I don't do much carving (none so far!) so I'll give the Dremel a try as I've got one to hand. If I decide to do more I'll certainly look at the grinder. Thanks again to all and I'll post the results.
