Default Scroll Saw Fries Itself!

I have a Craftsman scroll saw I use now and then. Hit the GO button yesterday, saw a flash of blue light down inside and a little puff of smoke. Does that mean what I think it means?! Ha!
Any thoughts fellas. My inclination is to toss it and buy something else. Or, I COULD try to find a motor I suppose. As a tool the saw is okay I guess. I simply cannot afford the $400 Dewalt and the Grizzly's show terrible reviews-at least the ones I've seen. And I no longer trust Delta....so what's a boy to do??

Hi Birch

If all the other items work on the saw why not just call Sears service center and just pickup a new motor it's cheaper than buying a new one.. they don't last forever ..
It just maybe a set of brushs that's needs to be replace...motors are motors..so to speak...

A flash and just quick puff of smoke, it may be a short also in that case a new motor is called for...

Birch,

There are A LOT of used scrollsaws available. My big delta I picked up off of ebay (way back) and they guy I bought it from gave me cases of good saw blades.

I think that a lot of guys buy a scroll saw, don't use it much or know what to do with it, then try to get some of their cash back. Check out Craigslist to see if there is someone in the area trying to offload one.

for example, near me there are 6 from $30 to $100. I've seen the dewalts as well.

If you've used yours a lot, it's probably the brushes, or a bunch of dust built up on them. Unplug the machine, Pop them out, see how they look. If there is plenty of brush left, gently blow some air in the holes to push some dust out of the way and reinstall them. You may be lucky. I've had this happen with angle grinders and metal dust.

If you're not comfortable doing this sort of thing, you can probably find someone local to do it for a reasonable price.

Your not supposed to let the smoke out of it I think your options are to get a motor from Sears, or get a used Dewalt if the Delta won't work for you.

Thanks fellas. We have been buried in a blizzard for last 24 hours or so. Couldn't get to my shed (shop) without my GPS and a parka. I may look into the brush situation and see if it is something I could do. Otherwise I guess I can think of a new motor or (more likely) it will go to the landfill and I find another used one.
Remember the old days when you could actually get things FIXED at a reasonable price. It makes me ashamed to think of some of the things I have been FORCED to throw away since there is no alternative.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Craigslist is the best solution. I bought my Craftsman for $25 and it only needed blades.
