Default A problem that really "bugs" me

I have a great exterminator that sprays my shop everytime he treats the house on a quarterly basis. This keeps all the "bugs" well under control, but does little to the spider population. I hate spiders especially after reading some greuling threads on black widows and brown recluses lately. To make a long story short, I was thinking of setting off a couple of those insect fog bombs in the shop to hopefully rid it of the spiders or at least reduce the population.

The 2 questions that I have regarding this thought are: will it be effective against these critters? Secondly, will the fog bombs create mositure and rust my tools?

Any advice on this subject wil be greatly appreciated.

HI Bob

Like you I hate spiders, I have tried the foggers, they just don't work for me...what works for me is Black Flag, as soon as I see a new web I got the Black Flag out and looking for the new webs.

Having worked as a professional in this field I can assure you that if the food supply is gone the spiders will vanish in short order. The best pesticide to use in your shop is boric acid, the same stuff they make eye wash from. It will kill ants, roaches, bees or wasps. It continues to work as long as it stays dry and is as safe as it gets. Dust the areas like cracks and crevices using a squeeze bottle to puff the dust in. Pay attention to areas like sills, around vents and in no time the food supply will be gone. Most any bug spray will kill spiders but they contain stuff that you do not need to be breathing.

Now guys,

Remember spiders are God's creatures too, they just tend to get a bit misguided and wander into our areas, areas by the way that used to be theirs.

I like the idea of the dust, it's safer and greener in the long run and it does the job to get rid of spiders.

Personally, I just pick them up and put them outside and that does it for me.

Mike,

Hi Bob,

I would gladly do so, however, the flights from here to Atlanta GA are really strange from my part of the world. Did it one time for a Primerica conference and it really was a tough bunch of connections. We went at a cold time of year but it looked like a pretty nice place.

Check twice! is on a distinguished road

I had a bad experience about 40 years ago with spray bombs. I was young foolish and thought I was a fortress.

I was trying to clear a area in an old basement of spiders, and I guess anything thing else that roamed around unwanted. I made two mistakes, the first I did not wear any protective breathing gear, and second thinking I was smarter than the instructions on the can.

That night and for 36 hours I thought I would die and at times wishing. The bathroom and me got to know each other quite well over the 36 hours. I poisoned myself with the spary.

I have not intentionally tried to rid spiders since then. I gained a whole new respect for them and what they must go through being sprayed. We have some mighty ugly spiders but none poison in our area.

Just a caution when deciding on a method of extermination.

Hello Bob,

I would have to agree with Mike about the Boric Acid. I bought a 1 Pound container and a duster and dusted all of the inside walls of a house I had built 10 years ago. I had not problems with spiders.

A word of caution about the bug bombs if you decide to use one. Make sure none of your equipment can make a spark, no open flame or you can blow up your shop and the spiders.
