I have to go along with DC, it depends on what I want. Selection at one store may be better than the other. As for prices, only pennies difference, not enough to quibble about. Both stores are same distance from me. They are about six blocks apart, BUT Lowes is the first one I come to. So I don't usually go over the hill to HD. Even tho I like Tony Stewart better than Jimmy Johnson, I still go to Lowes.
I really wish we had a Menards closer. I have to go to Indiana for them. They have a nice selection of products. I went there for my bathroom remodeling stuff. At Menards they ask you if you need help or if you ask for help, the employees are not allowed to point to where the object is. They have to take you to it.

I used to like HD and I even worked there for a couple of years. But, recently, it seems they never have what I am looking for so I end up going to Lowes. As far as service Lowes has HD beat by a mile. Being the novice that I am (jack of all trades / master of none) I usually know more about their stores than they do, so I don't worry about the service that much any way.

For me it's any port in a storm thing,,,they both have about the same,,service is about the same for both to me,,, they are both a good place to go nuts in so many items and I always find things I don't need and when I get back into my truck I just about always say crap I forgot that , and I dropped about twice what I was going to spend,,,well next time I guess LOL

After comparing prices or HD, Lowe's, and Menards. I end up at Menards now, good quality and better prices.

For lumber, I'll hit a local lumber yard. For almost everything else, it's Ace hardware, Menards or Fleet Farm. HS and Lowes are last resorts for me.

I love Lowes. Every time I go (@60 miles) I head to the tool department. They usually have something on clearance that is like 75-90% off. Not every time, but a good bit. I have not ever got this kind of deal at HD.

Let me think:

1) I got a Biesemeyer fence (@$400 at Amazon) for $85.00
2) Got a Bosch router table (@$200 at Amazon) for $35.00
3) Just got a Delta JT360 joiner 4 days ago (@$400 at Amazon) for $65.00
4) got some door handles (reg $1.97) for a penny apiece
5) got some brass 4" hinges about 3 weeks ago for $.25 each

All, new in the box.

This was just some of the deals I have bought at Lowes. I could keep listing but you get the idea. Some of this was regular clearance prices and I would use a $10 off $25 purchase or a 10% off coupon to make it even better. And again, I've not found a deal at HD. You can see why I like Lowes.
