"What is it?" #150

(This was a special for April Fools day so if you want to look at the whole post you know what it is about)



As a special treat for the loyal viewers of this part of our site I have decided to offer a major 10000 points to the first one that solves todays "What is it?".

This posting is only for the day... at midnight (of 4/1/2006) it is over so do your best.

This maybe the hardest one of these ever done so if at first you don't get it keep trying.... remember the 10000 POINTS.

Now I'm looking for an answer I have in my mind... I will however let the wording of the answer vary but it has to have the general contents I'm looking for.

Hey Ed

Its two Shopsmith Mark V model 520's c/w 12 " sanding disks.

Not sure I would want to start both machines up at the same time, with those disks spinning in the opposite directions, could get a little dicey.

Since I'm in such a good mood today and this a hard one....... how about we make it 11,000 points to the first one that gets it right??? OK it's a done deal!

I will maybe up the points again but if you think you have the answer don't wait too long, as you know 11,000 in your bank is better then none....

I am shocked! A joke? It sure looks real to me!

It looks like we all need to read the rest of the story and clear this up.


"Yes, as you can see this is not something everyone will want to do but no longer can anyone say the Shopsmith is underpowered. You want to rip those oak 4x4’s… no problem!

As some of you know I own 2 Shopsmith machines upgraded to 520’s and as can be seen it the second picture they must have changed paint color as the one on the right is a darker gray then the one on the left. Not that it maters… With having two machines comes the advantage of exchanging parts or as in this case adding a second headstock to one of the machines. Not only does the power go up but also now the machine is a lot heavier. The use as a drill press might be a bit too much for my old back to take and I don’t know if the Shopsmith lift system would help much… The other issue will be it’s now a bit short for some lathe work… but the added weight should make bowl turning better.

I had thought about putting a second carriage on too but I didn’t for this testing. This would give you the option of doing gang cutting with the table saw on sheets of plywood… think about how cool that could be. The problem here might be that you will need to come up with longer tubes to make it more useful. The minimum spacing for gang cuts might be to wide to work well, another issue to deal with.

By now you will have ask how in the heck this thing works??? Well it is much like a train with several engines. I use the 12” sanding disks, with course sandpaper (Velcro ones work best), I add one to the right unit as shown, and please note that we will be running at speeds way above the recommended speed but I think that limit was set for sanding but if you get a lot of vibrations you might want to get a new disk or have it balanced. The second disk goes on the left machine, you can see that I set and lock the machines so that a small space is left between the disks. I set the speed on the right unit (we are looking at this from the front) first. Please note the blue tape attached to both disks in the third picture… after the first “engine” is up to speed I power on the left one. One point to make is that you are now running two Shopsmith’s so make sure each is plugged in to a separate 20-amp circuit. Slowly turn the speed dial on the left unit until the two pieces of tape match speed (this takes a bit of effort) or so the left one is just a little slower then the right one. Now you engage the two by extending the quill on the left one until they are tight together. Locked in that position you have a double powered machine minus some power lost in the coupling.

I have used the name 4-01 for the new machine; this is in line with how trains are numbered for the number of drive wheels and a bunch of other things I don’t understand, but it sort of has a ring to it. I had a few other names that seemed to fit. The other factor is that today is 4-01 another good “fit” for the name. But I think best of all it fits because today after all is all fools day. Now you all have a good day and pass this on if you like.
