Hi: The correct name of this tool is a "Marking Guage" commonly used to mark cross grain for the layout of dove tails.

This model has a knife blade and is used for cutting across the grain or if you put the blade in backwards and tilt it will mark.

A common use for router people is to do the dovetail joints then come back and scribe the line so as to fool people into thinking that the joint was hand cut..... or so I'm told.

This one is not as nice as the ones in the catalog....... to bad I don't have a bigger tool budget.
