Default "What is it?" #84

This one is on the hard side but I'm going to leave you to guess or show me that you know what it is right away. I will give 20 points to the first 3 answers right or wrong and the first right answer gets 100 points. Now remember we need details of how this is used or what it is for.

Good luck!

I agree with ejant. If they are hole gages, I assume you squeeze the measuring end together and tighten the handle. Put the gage in the hole and release the handle tension. The gage ends expand to the hole diameter. Tighten the handle again and pull the gage out. Use mikes or caliphers to measure the gage end. Your set looks to be able to measure holes up to 3/8". Each gage measures a set size hole. Like 1/16"-1/8", 1/8"-1/4", 1/4"-5/16" etc.

I got my three posters so you each get the 20 points.

Yes they do measure inside dimensions of holes.

How to use them..... well that is not quite how it works..... The measuring head is relaxed in that the wedged shape that is pulled in by turning the handle is loosed. You slide it in place then as you turn the handle it expands the head until it makes contact. Then you stop and remove it, then as was mentioned you measure the diameter.

So why would you not just stick a drill bit in the hole? Well for one thing what drill bit would you use? fractional, metric, numbered, lettered, what if it was done with a drill then reamed to size???? Hey why guess when you can get the answer to a couple .001" ........

Got the idea? Hope so.

So the good Dr got close and since this is horse shoes it was close enough.
