Hi Quillman:

Whenever one can do this, one should.

However, some woodworkers use bits longer than the 2-3/8-inch range of the adjuster of the RA1161 Fixed Base or longer than the range of motion of the plunge action of the RA1166 plunge base. For example, some members here are mentioned using a 3"-long bit.
