Default Help for a newbie

Hello all. I am a newcomer to wood working but I am going to make a hanging wine shelf that will store wine glasses upside down on the bottom of the shelf. Please see attached image as an example. I do not have a router, so I am planning on buying one this weekend. I've done some research on router bits and it seems like I will just need a basic straight bit to cut into the wood plank to make the cut out for the wine stems. The shelf I am making will be 9 inches wide so I can slide two glasses into each slot, hanging side by side.

I was wondering if any of the kind folks here had any recommendations on routers and bits. I am hoping to continue in woodworking, making more shelves and fixing some trim that my contractor failed to complete, so I am wondering if I should get a mid range model, but really I've got no clue.

Thank you in advance!
