Hey I need help. I am working on a old cnc router the software used is unidex 600mmi a software created by Aeroteh and is also now obsolete. The router being used was bought used and modified for the previous owner. We do not have the software to reinstall everything but do have manuals received from Aerotech. I went through all parameters and messed with every setting I could but cannot seem to figure out why it cuts 1/32 under. Does anyone have any ideas??????

Good and bad thing about CNC is that they only do what you tell them. Seems you need to figure out what is telling about the 1/32" difference.

Some g-code and controllers used "offsets". In the g-code look for any M commands. In the controller setup look for offsets.

Check that the tool table in the software creating the g-code that the actual diameter matches what the title of the tool says. You can be choosing a 1/4" or 1/2" end mill from the tool table, but in the tool definition it is 1/32" under.

If the 1/32" is in the X or Y axis, then ensure the physical cutting diameter of the bit is accurate. Do not rely completely on the cutting diameter of the labeled package. Cut a square or rectangle and measure the final dimensions with a micrometer. Between tool tolerance and run-out it could be 1/32" which you need to account for in the tool table definition.

One CNC cutting technique is to cut with a minor offset for the initial depth and follow with a full depth cut for the final. This is particularly common where it takes multiple passes to get to the full depth. To eliminate the lines between passes you then cut full depth with only a small, such as 1/32", cut.

And there is always the chance that the controller setup is not accurate enough in how many steps are actually in base unit of measure. This would usually make a larger error based on the size of the piece cut.

Steve.
