Or so they say. To me $500 isn't exactly dirt cheap. Moot point anyway, 'cause I don't want one, I'm thinking one would pretty much take all the fun out of woodworking. So I'll just stick with my homemade masters/templates. Make Complex Cuts With Dirt-Cheap CNC Router
And, of course, was not looking for anything even vaguely resempling this, was looking for something on backyard trains.
Might open up cbc to some folks who can't afford to get a real one. It will be interesting to see what this does in the market place. Thanks for sharing
I saw this a couple of days ago, and looked at their video and info. It said that presently, there's no capacity for raising and lowering the cut. They're working on a Z axis feature, for around an extra $60. I have my doubts as far as any precision cutting, such as sign work, because of the chain guide suspension that depends on the weight of the router to hold itself in place. It seems like any knots or inconsistencies would cause the bit to cause it to jump off the line vertically. But I'll keep my eye on it and see what develops.
I think this might have possibilities in cutting out yard art patterns such as those offered by the Winfield Collection's Christmas patterns for Nativity scenes and Santa and reindeer patterns.
Doesn't interest me at all. Of course I do have access to a 5' x 10' Multicam CNC (90k+) when I need to cut sheet goods.
Another option that has been around for awhile is what PrintrBot came up with for 4x8 sheet projects. CNC | Printrbot. No, not for $500, but you do get a Z axis for only 8 times more.
