Bob's The Router* *Revised Edition and have a couple of questions.

When talking about making patterns he talks about and shows his 'pattern jig'.

Does anyone have or know where I can get plans for making that jig? I haven't been thinking router long enough to improvise. And I get a 'no match' when I search Oak Park.

Since that was revised in 1998, maybe there is a better way to make patterns?

Second question: What is the difference between a dado slot and a rabbet? I know a dado runs across the grain and a groove runs with the grain.... but what about a rabbet?

I'm starting to read the appendix of Bob's projects and jigs book. So expect more questions. <grin>

I made a huge mistake when I bought my router table. I bought one from MLCS. It wasn't the most expensive but is felt right at the time.

Then I got it put together..... too much "clutter". The T Track, the fence with each side being independently adjustable then moving the fence back and forth. And on and on.... I don't feel comfortable working at it with all that "stuff".

I took the fence off but there are still all those tracks which are dust collectors first class.

I've watch Bob and Rick till I know the dialog of each episode available. I love their KISS approach.

So this table will be gone very soon.

Dang, I'm gettin' picky in my old age. <very big grin>

b/4 the ski jig the pattern jig was on line to do the same thing...just a little bit diff. way...and holder :)

"but what about a rabbet?" it runs with the grain or across the grain the norm but it's on the edge of the board the norm,,,some call it a rebate :)

Thanks for the photo, Harry. I printed it so I can try to emulate.

Thanks to you as well, Jim... Here goes some more wood. I'm going to try as many methods as I can without buying anything right now. And definitely try Bob's hidden miter. That is really different.

Do you all reinforce the miter joint with a spline.... except for the locked miter?

Harry.... I'm getting a bit of a reputation.... just trying to be a woodworker. I got an offer for free wood but had to turn them down since I don't have a planer. (It was in pretty sad shape.) And right now I'm trying to figure out where I'm going to store a ton of wood pellets... like I'm not making enough sawdust all on my own.

Thanks again, guys.

OK.... So Bob says a rabbet is a "linear stepped notch". I understand that with no problem.

In the bit set I bought before I received the router this is one of the two rabbet bits. This is the reason I got a bit confused.... (no pun intended <grin>)

Can any rabbet bits be used like the picture?

HI Barb

It's the picture that got you confused I think,,but yes the bit in the picture can be used as a slot cutter or a rabbet bit or part of a T & G bit set..many router bits can be use to put rabbets in place but most look like the bits below and come with bearings so you change the depth of the cut..or you can use the fence to do the same thing.. :)

You're totally right, Bob. From that bit I believed that a rabbet had to have 2 sides and a bottom. So I couldn't see how it fit in with the dado and groove.

By the way, on some of the Router Workshop do you get a black diamond with a white question mark in the center where I believe a number should be?

I checked and believe I have the right fonts installed to get those numbers.

No matter how much routering or woodworking I do, I'll never be as good at them as I am at asking questions. <grin>

Thanks,

Barb
