Hey,
Last week I routed into a knot and the bit overheated. (oh dopey me). Since then I have had to gently pry every bit out of the 1/4" collet. I cleaned the collet with alcohol and cotton swab. I got lots of black gunk but the bit still sticks.

Did the overheating do something bad to my collet?
Is there something I can do to solve this problem short of buying a new collet?

Thanks in advance.

It's possible, but it is also possible that the alcohol didn't get it all. Might try soaking it in lacquer thinner or a lacquer reducer, Xylene (?). Let it soak for awhile, That pitch can be pretty tough.
Good Luck

I'm surprised Barb that the short length of time the cutter would have been in contact with the knot that the cutter would have over-heated. Gum seems the most likely cause in which case removing the nut and collet and soaking them in a strong solvent should solve the problem.

Ok, Harry.... just threw the nut in the lacquer thinner pot. Had the collet there already.

Should I simmer that while I'm gone? <very big grin>
This is somewhat like making a stew. What else should I put in? (start thinking like a woodworker, start thinking like a woodworker.) <tee hee hee>

HI Barb

Give the lacquer a try out, but they made and sell cleaner just for that job,,I'm not sure what's in it but it will take of pitch in a heart beat...or free up the collet, I use it for many jobs, I'm a smoker and it's about the only thing that will cut the nasty smoke film off many things..

It's not cheap but it's worth having some around all the time..:)
I have a nasty habit of pulling the bits out after using them and clean them b/4 I put them back in the box..it gives me a chance to check the bit out for cracks or for any damage ...
