I have been away from this hobby for a few years and have decided to re-enter this great hobby!! I have an old B&D router, 2HP, 12 amp router that has been a great addition to my workshop for the past 30 years or so. However, I am in the market for a new router and see that there seem to be at least (2) general types, standard and plunge types. Is it possible to use a plunge style almost exclusively as a "standard" type of router? Sorry for the simplistic question, but like I mentioned above, I have not been in the market for a router in at least 30 years.
Hi Ho: You really have to decide what the router is going to do. If you want to rasie panels for cabinets you should opt for a 3HP plus job. It would then need to be table mounted. If cost is an issue, you can get such a router from $130 to almost $400.
If you don't want to table mount, then a plunge router in the 2 to 2 1/2 hp will do most everything hand held.
It is possible to buy "combo kits" that offer both standard and plunge bases for the router. That way you have the best of both.
