hi i have just been given a second hand hitchi router the half inch 1800w machine, the trouble is there is an old cutter in the machine, and i dont know how to slacken the collet. also i need a coppy insert for this thanks fpr any help!!
Look for a spindle lock. Put a wrench that fits on the top of the collet, engage the spindle lock and heave on the wrench.
However, I prefer the two wrench method, hence the Makita wrenches for an Hitachi router Flip the router over so you're looking down at the collet. Lefty loosie, righty tighty! Put the wrenches on the armature and the collet. The top wrench you want to go counter clockwise. The bottom wrench is going to stay put. Position the top wrench so it is slightly more toward you than the bottom wrench. Wrap your hand around both wrenches and squeeze. If that doesn't move the collet, with the wrenches in the same position, stick a screw driver between the wrenches and use it as a lever between the wrenches -- again top wrench goes counter clockwise.
It is possible that you might not have a hex nut on the armature. If so, use an extension on the wrench to increase the torque on the wrench.
I acquired one of my routers, used, with a bit that had been in it for who knows how long. By the time I got it out, the collet was no longer any good. It would still hold a bit. But when you removed it, the nut would come off. Then the collet and bit had to be pulled out with pliers.
