Lap joint on any of the man made woods always work well,,
MDF,Plywood,OBS,etc. it's not the fasteners of the joint but it's the joint that does the work, just like the hinge pocket,it's not the screws but the pocket it sets in..just like a lap joint..
You can made a lap joint look great with square/round dowels and it's very strong or no dowels at all because of the size of the lap joint, or the type of lap joint (dovetail lock type)..the norm....
But I will say lap joint are tricky and must be done just right, once the stock is remove you can put it back..
It's a very old joint,used in furniture ,old barns,bridle joints,etc.
Here is a Wiki page that leads to lots of information on different joints and where to use them. Woodworking joints - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I had a link to a chart of wood joints and their applications but I can't seem to find it now. I'll keep looking
I try to use just a few joints in projects. M&T, locking rabbet, and half lap are the ones I use the most. If a project calls for something else, I'll learn another one, but may not use it again.
This learning curve that started in May is still headed straight up. I think this time I'll never get over that peak.
But the fun is in trying! :jester:
