Hi Woody, welcome to the forum.
I guess I don't quite understand the question. What is it you are trying to do? Maybe that will clear it up a bit for me. Are you asking about the bit opening in the router base or the router motor itself?
Guess I'm still confused. I measured the bottom bearing OD on my Hitachi M12VC at 1-1/2" and on my Freud 1200 at 1-3/8". Both are 2-1/4 hp units. Your post referred to "smaller" 1-5/8 to 1 3/4". May be I'm not measureing what you are looking for. The OD of the bearing retainers are larger, likely in that range.
Hope this helps, dunno how it can, but......???
What about making a angle plate that will mount to your router plate, and also mount to the cross slide on your lathe.... Guess I should ask what kind of lathe first wood or metal?
You might check out this web site. They show the Trend plunge router in hand-held use like a die grinder in one of the pictures on that page. This is the picture you requested, with the trend out of the base. The web site says "Electronic variable speed and has a removeable base with 1 11/16 collar for carving, die grinding and pillar drill fitment." Does that mean the OD of the metal support near the shaft is that diameter? I don't know but you could email them (after converting it to metric <g>).
With its 11,500 - 32,000 rpm variable speed range it may work well for you. They are sold at Woodworkers Supply, amongst many other places.
