I've been reading on this forum for a few days now and must say, It's a great way to exchange information.
I've got a problem with a Freud FT1760 Plunge Base on my FT1700VCE, 2 1/4
hp Router.
I can't believe the designed it this way. The plunge action has only 1/2" of
downward travel. I bought a Porter Cable Dovetail Jig, and was attempting to get set up so I could try it out. That's when I found that my Freud Router doesn't accept PC Template Guide Bushings. Thats how I came to find this forum... looking for an adapter, which I found and am now waiting for. In the meantime I was trying to adapt a TurnLock base to it. Of course the screws
were 4 mm Metric which I didn't have (long enough). Today I found some screws which brings me to my limited plunge problem. Is it defective or did they design it so that DANGEROUS BIT remains completely shrouded by the
Base ?
can't help with the travel, It's the one brand I don't have. don't sound correct though.
but I would just make a new base to fit the PC bushings, just takes a few minutes. there are lots of info in the archives. Been a least two in the pass month.
Good luck
Harry
It sounds you have a dud or you have something stuck/jammed,,it should go about 2" in travel..I would stop by where you got it and take a look at one on display if it works right go back out the car/truck and take yours back in and say ,please replace it...
Thanks for the come-back...
2'' would be great. I'm assuming the pole stop you are referring to is the
plunge limiting device with the 3 screws at diferent heights. It rotates to allow plunges to diferent depths. Anyway that's not it. On either side of the
base there is a shrouded rod with a spring that raises the router after the plunge. On one side, under the plastic shroud and the spring there is a steel sleeve with the ror inside it. The bottom of the sleeve is 1/2" above the base before any downward movement. This sleeve moves down with the Router motor and limits travel to that 1/2".

There are two stops on a plunge router. The one you're referring to limits the downward motion of the collet (depth of plunge). The other one limits how far the collet can raise above the work surface (top position). The difference between them gives you the depth of plunge (limited only by the spring / piston travel within the rubber sleeves.
I've looked and have been unable to tell for sure but it appears that the top position is set using the depth adjustment control you use when it is in the fixed base. Have you tried raising the router within the plunge base before plunging or is your bit too short to let you do that?
Greetings Art and welcome to the router forum, I agree with BJ, check it out and then take it back if yours seems defective. For that matter take it back and ask them about it. With router in hand they may be able to evaluate it.
Welcome to the group. Please call our Power Tool Parts and Repair Dept at (800) 334-4107 and describe the issue to one of our techs and they will be happy to assist.
ALL,
Thanks for all of your ideas and remedies. I deceided it had to be stuck, so I removed the router from the base and "thumped it" with the heel of my hand. That knocked it free and it is OK now.... Except now I feel like a Jerk !
I did learn that there are many good people out there willing to lend a hand. Thanks again.
