Staring to know the router

Hi,
My name is Joseph Zambito. I'm a retired physician and know next to nothing about woodworking. So, bare with my ignorance. I've been told not to use the router up-side-down (the router under the table an the bit coming up, out of it). This made me buy, some time ago, Shopsmith router table in which the router is fixed to a lever above the table which allow you to operate by lowering the bit to the stock. Is it true? Most of the routers I see used with a table are used up-side-down.
Also, is the easiest way to "dig" a mortise by using a horizontally-plunging roter bit?
Finally, is there an available jig to have the router operate horizontally?
Thank you for any suggestion!
Joez

Welcome Joez! Welcome to Router Forums, I would think that someone was worried about dust and chips going through the router. Yes, they make a horizontal router,You can buy a table top from Oak Park that has dust collection built in, and they make a very nice table that gets the job done without all the bells and whistles built in. If you have ever watched the Router Workshop, on PBS, They used a table built by them. There is a link on this forum, on the left side of the page that has a link. Good Luck:) The horizontal table, i am not sure who makes it, You will get someone who knows more about that table, Thanks There is not a dumb question, and thanks for asking. Oak-Park.com is the link for Oak Park, and they have videos to show their table

Hi Joe

Just To add note to Howard's post

"If you have ever watched the Router Workshop, on PBS"

It's HARD to find the RWS on the PBS (TV) now days..

But you can see it on your computer 24/7 and it's free..:)
The Woodworking Channel Video Library
Just select the RWS from the menu bar and you can select from 35 of them..
It's worth the time, just make some pop corn and sit back and enjoy.
