Hi All

I have been doing basic carpentry since I was a kid, but about two years ago my wife suggested that I get into woodworking as a hobby and a distraction from work (I love my work - maybe too much - I design cyber security systems for energy companies - I call it "getting paid good money for thinking evil thoughts").

Joining a forum was the last thing I planned to do - I spend my day with a computer and so I want to spend my off-time with my wood and my tools, not more computer time. But I really want to learn to use the router well. Interestingly, I have had a great mentor for using hand tools (he is a classically apprenticed British fine furniture maker), but he doesn't believe in routers. So in the interest of keeping all my fingers, I thought I'd better join one woodworking forum and it was either here or SMC.

As for the name, that was my wife's suggestion - she wonders if I am more interested in doing woodworking or buying new tools, and some days she has a point - As an P.Eng., I love tools and the fine engineering the best exemplify. But she is great - she might roll her eyes, but has never complained when a new box arrives, so I am very lucky. And in exchange I try to pick carefully.

Look forward to being part of the community.

Regards

Greetings, Eric...

I share your love of tools and fine engineering and use it to distract me from my day-to-day engineering work (PE). I've found this place to be a treasure of knowledge. The much-more-experienced folks help keep my mistake count down and have never failed to provide one or more safe approaches to what I wanted to accomplish.

Welcome!
