Hitachi M12V Loose Collet/Lost Magnet

A friend of mine owned this router for 10+ years. After using a collet extender on it for a short while the bearings went. So he tried to replace the bearings...and failed. So he gave the whole thing to me since he knows I like to tinker.

Got the bearings replaced but the magnet at the top of the shaft was damaged, presumably from my friend trying to remove it to get the bearing off the shaft. I ordered a new one, but can anyone tell me what it's for? Can I use the router without it?

Secondly, I thought I had the collet secure on the shaft before reinstalling the shaft/armature assembly in the housing. First time I fired up the router, the collet spun loose and onto my bench. Without completely disassembling the router, how do I get this tight? Will a drop of Loc-Tite work?

I await the knowledge and wisdom of my esteemed colleagues!

Thanks,

Hi Randy:

I'm looking at the parts blowup of the M12V and part number 4 is indeed a magnet. It is possible that it is part of the speed sensing since it is close to the variable speed circuitry. However, I'm guessing so we're definitely in the "call Hitachi" department. Would I use it without? Well, would you drive your car with no brakes or gas pedal? The magnet could be providing a "Hall Effect" input to the speed control. Without it, the router might only run full out or not at all.

I'd check with Hitachi first. They have good user support in Canada, although I can't speak for where you are. Where are you?

Thanks guys. I was hoping to avoid disassembling the thing again after I went to the trouble of cleaning it inside and out and putting it all back together. Thanks for the article link (which, by the way, doesn't load with Google's Chrome browser). Hitachi recommends Loc-Tite, so I'll have to make a trip to the auto parts store and try to decipher all the different types.

Locktite

Hi Randy - just ask 'em for medium strength. The red and green stuff won't come apart again, or may come apart but will likely destroy the router in the process.
Don't ask me how I know this:eek:
