I have been in the process of building some baby furniture for my wife. She is due in June and wants me to get started on building the crib and changing table soon. The changing table is going to be a breeze, and the crib should not be that hard. I have been contemplating using dowls to connect my vertical slats to the rail, but I feel that a mortise and tenon joint would be a better way to go. I can make the tenon either on my TS or my router, but I do not have a mortise machine.
I have a plunge router and a drill press. I have seen kits for the drill press and have found articles online from shopnotes explaining how to make a jig for use with the router. My question is if I go with the router method, what is the best way to square up the mortise holes? I would think a hand chisel is the best, but I wanted to ask the group first. If I go with the kit for my drill press it comes with a sqaure chisel bit like you would find on a mortise machine. I just figured instead of buying a kit for my drill press, a cheap router jig is the way to go. I would greatly appreciate any advice or comments on this subject. Unfortunately with the baby on the way, my new tool budget is under lock and key from the Mrs. :-(
