I have a 3hp porter cable VS router I've had for a number of years. I'm having a problem with it cutting out to a groan under minimal feed. If I shut it off, it will start right back up. Is it time to be replaced or is there a fix? Any advice will be appreciated.
Bill,
I would pull the brushes, look em over. Are they bluish? scored? If so so take a small pencil with a radius about the size of the concave surface with some sandpaper wraped around it...about 400 - 600 grit and smooth them up...If they are worn down then replace em.
Take a good long look at the commutator. If it is scored fit a bit of sandpaper into the brush opening and try to smooth it as much as you can. If this fails take it to have repaired.
It is my belief that old tools are worth having repaired verses the new ones...The old ones were built with so much better quality than those today no matter whose name is on em..
Just my opinion..I don't trash old tools..there like old people..they have a story to tell...just listen..
George is right. Mine was acting up, had spend it's whole life under a table. I opened it up and blew a cup full of sawdust out of it. been working fine very since. Brushes are cheap, replace them while you have it open. Be sure and blow out the VS switch, Mine was packed. bet yours is too.
+1 on Henry's post. I've got the 3hp PC 7518 and have had the top open, checking out the electronics. For all the wonderful things I like about that router, the seal between the VS switch and the housing would be an area for improvement!
