Hello all! I introduced myself a few weeks ago. I just bought my first router! I bought the Craftsman 2hp fixed & plunge combo. My first project is to finish a kitchen countertop. Does anyone have experience with laminate trimming? Which bits would work best? Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to many more projects!
That Katana bit looks like a great idea. Don't be scared to spend the money on it because glue build up is a real problem.
I found that my biggest problem with burning was going to slow. Keep the speed up. Also keep the bit just far enough down to cut the formica or it can take the finish off the face of the edge when the router tips as you move it down the counter.
A formica file is real nice as the edge will be realy sharp and you just run it down the top edge to dull it. Also you use it to finish off in the corners where you can't get the router in.
Hi John, Congratulations on a great router. I think that you will find that it will so almost anything you are inclined to through threw it! Enjoy, and keep posting
Thanks for all the helpful info! My project is complete! I didn't spend the money on the Katana (not in the budget right now). Someone gave me a tip to use a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the surface of the laminate. I used a Skil laminate bit and kept the router moving and it worked great!
I also got this router, although with just the fixed base. It seemed like an excellent value, and am looking forward to starting to use it. Is the plunge base without the motor available? I looked, but haven't seen it yet. I'd like to get it on down the road.
