Fixed base router v Plunge

Here in Europe, I can't say I've ever seen a fixed based router for sale.
What do they do that a plunge can't ? Why fixed base ?

The one advantage a fixed base router has over a plunge is, it has a larger opening for the bits. Also, with a plunge, the bit retracts inside the router, this can be a safety hazard for the fixed. Other than this, I can't see anything that one can do better than the other. I prefer plunge, others prefer fixed.
