Hi I have been scrollsawing for many years and have just started making burr puzzles and was just wondering if it's possible to produce finished square stock with a router?? i.e. 10mm/3/16. Thanks in advance.

Not sure how you would rip it into strips with a router but surfacing stock to a consistent thickness is possible with a router. Search the forums for "ski jigs" and "thicknessing" and you should find several posts on the topic.

You can also use a router (table mounted is easier) as an edge jointer.

No saw

Hi Ronald.
No sadly I live in a small apartment or flat as they are called here in the U.K. so space is at a premium. my hope is that with a router I can produce small amounts of square stock to make reasonable burr puzzles.

Richard..

mind if I ask ya, where you find your spec's for the puzzles? I thoroughly enjoy building burr puzzles, but have not been able to find a really good source for plans...

Burr puzzles

Hi Bill
You probably already know about this site, it has lots of links to really good info on puzzles. sorry I can't put a link untill I have 10 posts but it is at toolcrib.com/blog/2008/12/15/30-free-3d-puzzle-plans-for-woodworkers-burrs-japanese-boxes-tangrams-and-more/ with www. at the start.

Again sorry if this has already been posted.
Regards Richard.

There are several books around and if you start googling for terms like "SOMA" and "HALF HOUR PUZZLE" you will find several sites dedicated to 3x3 cube style puzzles. Usually you can find a diagram of the puzzle piece shapes. Easiest way to make most of these shapes is from small cubes.

Another good search term is "PENTOMINO" which brings up all kinds of sites about the 2-d pentomino puzzle pieces. This is another good candidate for easy puzzle making.

For books, you can hit Amazon.com or Abebooks.com with the same search terms. And I requested through interlibrary loan "Crafting Wood Logic Puzzles" by Charlie Self. This is a great book and has lots of good ideas. I made some notes when I had it and I've used those notes to help me with my googling to find patterns and more ideas.

Oh, and as to burr puzzles, Charlie Self's book has several plans and there was an article in a recent American Woodworker on burr puzzles. I believe some or all of that article is available on-line from the magazine's web site.
