I am making a wooden sign which and need some assistance in joining the
plywood to the 2'x2' post. I need to use a router to cut a 1/2" slot in the
2x2. My problem is that I have done many types of woodworking projects, but I have never used a router. I'm thinking of using a plunge router which will allow me to set the depth to cut the slot. But, someone said that it would be best to use a router table. I just need a little help.

Thanks,
Ken

You can do it either way. If you use the plunge router I would use a straight edge guide to keep the cut straight. Make several passes going deeper every pass. If you use table you have the fence as a straight edge. Mark your stopping & starting points. If the slot is not to long you can use a stop block fastened to the fence so the cut will stop at the same point every time.
