Default Unsticking 1/4 inch collett

I was going to try out a couple of new 1/4 shaft router bits I bought and they wouldn't go into the collett. I thought for a while the person I bought them from on ebay had sold me some exotic diameters. But then I tried some bits I had used before without a problem, and they wouldn't go in either.

Cleaned up the collett as best I could, but still no-go. Cleaned the shafts of the bits, still no-go.

I'm probably using the wrong cleaner. I used some stuff I bought at wood for cleaning the pitch off saw blades.

What do you guys use for cleaning a collett?

And is there another kind of problem I should be looking for?

" But then I tried some bits I had used before without a problem, and they wouldn't go in either." = ???????

try this take the collet and nut off the router and then push the bit in,they should go in free, if not you may have damaged the collet..and now must be replace..

Hi Vaughn:
If you have another collet like maybe a 1/2", try it with some 1/2" bits. Did you tighten the collet nut down without having a bit in it? If so you may have damaged the collet.
It's a common mistake. If you take the collet nut off and remove the collet from the nut, you may have to put the collet back into the nut until it clicks, then mount it back on the router. Hope this helps. Never tighten a collet nut down without a bit in it.
