Default Router procedure question, please

Hello everyone, just joined the forum and I'm very interested in learning routing procedures as part of my work working skills, so I thought this might be the best way to learn. From those who know routing. I've included an attachment with a picture and dimensions of my project and was just curious if you think a router is the best option to cut out the black area for a fireplace insert to fit. The area is 1/2" too short too fit the insert, so I thought this would be the best fix. Any suggestions? Love the posts that I've read so far on routers. I thought maybe a jig spaced for the bit outside of the pattern, but not sure how to "clean out the middle, once I've gone along the outside of the pattern. Thanks, Gary
