Default Collet extension for coping sled?

I made a coping sled for my router table (Jessem) and the extra 1/2" base of the sled doesn't allow the bit to reach the piece I'm trying to do a cope on ... the bit ends up being locked for removal/replacement by the interlock on the router instead. The only thing I can think of at the moment is a collet extension but I'm not crazy about the tradeoffs (safety/runout) with that approach. Anything I'm missing (besides a better / different router ... I already own 4)?

Any / all advice appreciated!

Thanks

MLCS Router Collet Extension and Review

I was considering one of these but it turned out I didn't need it.

How much more do you need? What router and lift are you using?

What router do you have in there?
I had a similar problem with my Freud 1700. Collet extension put the bit to high also. Eneded up pulling the bit up in the collet which is waaay down on my list of things I like to do.
Can you temporarily defeat the spindle lock?

John Schaben

The problem with experience is I usually get it immediately after I need it.

I have a Triton router with no lift. I haven't found a way to override the spindle lock but did find another way to get my job done short term AND I went ahead and purchased a collet extension ... for $50 I figured what the heck. I haven't tried the extension yet.
Thanks for all responses!
P.S. I like your quote ...
